The band's name was inspired by a steamroller parked outside their residence. The original lineup consisted of Stills (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Martin (drums, vocals), Palmer (bass), Furay (guitar, vocals), and Young (guitar, harmonica, piano, vocals). They signed to Atlantic Records in 1966 and released the single "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing", which achieved regional success in Los Angeles. In January 1967, they released "For What It's Worth", which became their only US top 10 hit and a widely recognized counterculture anthem. Their second album, "Buffalo Springfield Again", reflected a move toward psychedelia and hard rock and included songs such as "Bluebird" and "Mr. Soul". The band faced several drug-related arrests and lineup changes before disbanding in 1968. Their third and final album, "Last Time Around", was released shortly after their breakup. Following the group's dissolution, Stills formed the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash with David Crosby of the Byrds and Graham Nash of the Hollies. Neil Young pursued a solo career and later joined Stills in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Furay, alongside Jim Messina, formed the country-rock band Poco. Buffalo Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and briefly reunited for a comeback tour in 2011.
